News from Lower Umpqua HospitalDr. John Crocker Recognized for Service At its January 28, 2004, meeting the Lower Umpqua Hospital Board of Directors recognized Dr. John Crocker for his twelve years of service as a board member. Crocker recently resigned from the Board as he now lives outside the hospital district. He was presented a token of appreciation--a handsome wooden box embellished with nautical knots. When Dr. Crocker joined the board, the hospital was near closure. He and other Board members stepped up to the enormous task of turning the hospital around and helped secure a tax base increase. He was also essential to the recruitment of the hospital's first general surgeon, orthopedic surgeon, and internist. That established a strong medical staff base, which helped to stabilize hospital admissions. Dr. Crocker also took the lead in establishing Reedsport as a training site for Rural Family Physicians as well as helping to form the South Coast Health Alliance. His contribution and support also led to the modernization of the hospital that will enable the hospital to meet the community's current and future needs. The Oregon Academy of Family Practice recognized Dr. Crocker in 1997 as the Oregon Family Doctor of the Year. Dr. Crocker continues to see patients at Dunes Family Health Care and Lower Umpqua Hospital.
